The brief for the three stage competition asked to design a market & provide solution for markets tailor made for Indian context by understanding the country’s distinct and diverse culture, social structure, climate and economic background. The overall context provides a unique taste, movement patterns, and behavioral patterns of the people in the country, which are key to understand to design a public space like market. The brief also emphasized in how the market place should also be reminiscent of its location.
After studying the local markets in Goa and in the city of Mumbai, the use of modern day push cart stood out as a functional problem for the market. The cart, convenient for a vendor to carry and sell his/her products in and around a market functions organically. At large the flexibility of moving the cart depends on the customer movement, it is an advantage for the cart owners but its a disadvantage to the vendors selling from shops within the market and also a cause for disruption of the flow of crowd . The goal is to make the cart a part of the design solution & provide a dedicated space called the 'Hub’ for their owners within the market. The floor of the‘Hub’ will be installed with rails on which the carts will be placed to move within the planned space of the market. Various shops & amenities within the market would be designed around the ‘Hub’.
