Gresham Smith designed the renovation and expansion of Henrico Doctor’s Hospital Forest Campus’ the Women’s Hospital located in Richmond, Virginia.
GS&P partnered with Henrico Doctors’ Hospital to relocate the services of the Women’s Pavilion into one centralized location, expanding all women’s care services in order to meet the growing demand of women and their families in the Richmond community. The Women’s Hospital includes a curved, two-story lobby, vestibule, new drop-off canopy, new exterior signage, and a newly renovated and dedicated entrance on Forest Avenue, intended to improve patient flow and access.
The project includes 60,000 square feet of renovated space and a 20,000-square-foot expansion, including a new lobby, state-of-the-art Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, 12 additional Labor and Delivery rooms (L&D), a newly renovated and relocated antepartum unit, and upgraded postpartum unit. A new triage area and recovery suite supports the OB/GYN Operating rooms, providing operational efficiencies and improved patient throughput. The newly renovated L&D rooms also feature color-changing LED lights, which can be controlled by patients. These can mimic the color temperature of light throughout the day.
The new curved exterior and lobby create a strong identity for The Women’s Hospital entrance while the local stone used on the exterior facing wall maintains a sense of place for the new facility. The two-story lobby features a glass exterior wall allowing light to penetrate the interior and create a warmer environment for patients and visitors. Women, new parents and their growing families often spend a significant amount of time in the hospital and these updates are intended to create and support patients and visitors with a more comfortable, calming environment.
