CAOZITOU bench
As the signature product, it was born together with the brand, visually inspired by the radical “
艹
(CAOZITOU)” of Chinese character, literally meaning “the upper radical of grass”.
A radical is an indexing graphical component for Chinese character, which sets a domain for the definition of the character as well as changes its pronunciation
:
早
(meaning morning that pronounces “zao“ )
+
艹
(CAOZITOU) =
草
( becomes “cao” meaning grass)
△ USE OFCAOZITOURADICAL
The radical of
“艹
(CAOZITOU)” is used mostly in characters related with nature or vegetation, showing love as a brand to nature.
It is this little icon, which alone is undefined, but affixed to other characters it becomes an identity giving symbol.

As how radical works for Chinese characters, CAOZITOU furniture is also designed to be an attachment to a given space, supplying it with a unique harmonic ambient, which can only exist by the union of space and furniture piece.CAOZITOU bench is made by plywood with metal reinforcing structure, aiming to create an effortless shape formed by three simple strokes of even thickness – a long horizontal and two short vertical ones. The proportion of the horizontal stroke has naturally given the bench a sharing character as a seat, and the two vertical ones serve as support for the bench as well as dividers that create an in-between space to the users place something. This in-between space belongs to the furniture as well as the environment.
△ CAOZITOUBENCHSPATIAL LOGIC

As a multidisciplinary studio mainly focusing on architecture and interior design, for STUDIO8, time is always the key for their projects, which connects the two central elements: people and place. How people spend time in the space, and how the space interacts with the place through time are the only two guides for them to form an architecture. Form itself is never the starting point in STUDIO8’s design.
While when it comes to product design, the form, as one of the dominant properties of an object, has taken a much more important role. It sets a “rule” to the space around it, uncovering a symbiosis between the space and the object itself. This is the simple spatial logic of CAOZITOU furniture.
Besides the form that gives order to the space, attached function and changeable style are the other two fundamental characters of CAOZITOU’s DNA. A small table and extension legs are designed to be attached to the basic form for more comfort and engagement as well as possibility of changing styles with different material combinations. Material is strictly correlated to people’s perception for a space. “We were thinking why can’t us design the furniture like fashion garments that can let people change their style according to different occasions?” asked Shirley, the founder of STUDIO8. The extension legs of the bench is always called “the boots” in STUDIO8, which is made by a group of four CNC-cut pieces that can be easily installed together. And the small round table is called the hat. “Why can’t a bench have more than one coat, pair of boots and hat?”

CAOZITOU Pagoda
It is a research project that STUDIO8 has started in 2021. It is a functional installation designed for multi-functional public space like lecture hall or workshop, made by a group of stacked CAOZITOU benches and some stools. Inspired by traditional Chinese pagoda, the installation can be assembled and unassembled partially or completely with simple tenon structure, meeting the needs of the space.

When the seats are not needed, the pagoda itself is composed as a free-standing bookshelf with components (stools, recomposed recycle foam seat cushions, and height extension) placed freely on it, forming shapes occurring different Chinese characters. “We would like to try, for the first time, putting multiple ‘immaterial radical’ together to create a changing spetial totem that reflects the interaction between people, space and furniture”, said STUDIO8.

People’s interaction with the installation are recorded for studio’s further product improvement and development. The pagoda installation without finishing material acts also as a research and workshop base for different material studies and application to generate more interests of young people in new materiality and craftmanship.
