Radio Hair Salon is situated within the thriving cultural and arts district of Kings Cross, a 67-acre development in central north London. A former disused industrial railway site, the development is rich in history, subculture and material references. Today it houses the arts college Central Saint Martins, Google’s offices, the Guardian’s headquarters and is adjacent to the St Pancras Eurostar terminal.
Radio Hair began in East London and now has three salons. For the Kings Cross site, Universal have designed a contemporary salon and gallery space with beauty treatment rooms and a photography studio.
The raw, industrialised history of Kings Cross and loft warehouse spaces served as inspiration for the space. Universal sought out local skilled craftsmen in joinery and metalwork to fabricate key detail pieces that bring a ‘lifestyle’ element – an eclectic mix that celebrates the Radio brand and feels knitted into the area.
