Cometa is an Italian bistro and concept store located along the bank of Suzhou Creek in Shanghai. Conceived as the first brick-and-mortar outpost for a successful online fashion shop, Cometa delivers much more as a highly curated destination for unique cocktails, food, fashion and lifestyle.

Historically, Suzhou Creek was an important conduit linking Shanghai to Suzhou with a multitude of warehouses and factories along its banks. Cometa reactivates this maker and providore heritage in a modern iteration in the same location.
MASS drew from eclectic references of this layered industrial history, the context of place, and the owners’ hometowns of Shanghai and Milan for the interior concept.

An industrial corrugated metal volume was inserted along the length of the space housing the bar, kitchen, openings for service, shelving and bathroom. The surrounding bistro and retail spaces seamlessly flow into each other with a layout akin to a residential abode. This is domestic scale is further heightened with the use of charcoal mosaic on the floor.

The walls are stripped back exposing the original hexagonal columns and layers of plaster on the concrete walls. White perforated wood boards are suspended from the ceiling to soften the space visually and acoustically and to reflect more light into the space.

MASS pushed in the diagonal façade to create a loggia evocating the traditional open sitting room of Mediterranean villas or plazas, thus inviting clientele to sit on, at, and within the façade. By blurring the realms of public and private, street activity is invited in and similarly the internal happenings of the store become an extension of the neighborhood streetscape.

In the loggia, a cream mosaic floor welcomes clientele with an inset Cometa logo often found at the entrance of providores of old. In a nod to the industrial heritage of this locale, folding metal shop doors close the façade at the end of the day.

Inspired from the clarity, craft and functionality seen in the modern American minimalist movement, Cometa’s custom furniture was designed by Alan Grillo Spina, owner and creative director of Cometa, in collaboration with MASS. Stained plywood is combined with utilitarian brushed stainless steel, vernacular bamboo and vintage fabrics.
