The apartment hotel Pergola Residence, near Merano in South Tyrol, was designed by the Italian architect and designer Matteo Thun. The architecture draws its inspiration from the terraced vineyards which surround the property. With its terraced form, planted roofs and wooden pergolas, the hotel blends in beautifully with its surroundings and gives a distinct nod to local architectural traditions. The façades are clad with rubble stone (directly referencing the walls of the vineyard terraces) and larch wood. Wood is also the defining characteristic of the interior design of all 14 apartments, and is used in the flooring, wall paneling and furniture. The variously-sized apartments are all south-facing and feature spacious terraces overlooking the Etsch Valley. The design is simple, elegant and reduced to the essentials; the focus is the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
The Pergola Residence has a Bistro, serving breakfast and homemade cakes in the afternoon – it even has a wine cellar.
