Designer Neal Beckstedt creates a playful yet sophisticated retreat in Gramercy Park for a young cosmopolitan French couple.

Beckstedt refinished the existing parquet wood floor to a matte-wax sheen throughout the home. In the dining room, a vintage black lacquer base was refitted with a Montclair Danby marble top from Stone Source and topped with a vintage crystal chandelier from Judy Frankel. The vintage Louis XVI dining chairs were stripped and reupholstered in a blush cotton velvet by Brunschwig & Fils.

A pair of gilt sconces from Vaughan illuminate an alcove formed by custom built-in bookcases and dominated by a vintage leather chesterfield sofa.  Pattern and texture comes by way of striped linen drapery fabric by Larsen and a geometric rug from House of Luv.

Airy white walls and billowing tasseled curtains custom made with Holly Hunt fabric create a sense of grandness that matches the client’s piano and ebonized Pierre Chareau stool and continues in the vintage Dupre-Lafon club chairs.

The powder room blends sophisticated and whimsical elements, including a vibrant patterned Hermès wallpaper, a genre-bending Gio Ponti mirror, and a brass hippo faucet by P.E. Guerin. For added dimension, Beckstedt painted the flooring in a custom gloss-and-matte-black diamond pattern.

Beckstedt covered the master bedroom’s custom headboard with navy velvet from Anne Kirk Textiles and linen from Theo. The duvet is also custom designed and made with ivory linen fabric from Manuel Canovas and Christian Liaigre, with trim by Samuel & Sons. A custom trifold mirror conceals entrances to the study and master bath.
