Giant Leap worked closely with the executives of the Barloworld Corporate Office to design and build their prestigious new 2 955m² corporate office space.

Barloworld’s brief to Giant Leap was to integrate its new ethos in all elements of design, which is to include being agile, bold, and ambitious and living in a winning environment yet still upholding Barloworld’s core values. Barloworld’s extensive contemporary African art collection was also a key focus and the design brief further required due consideration for inclusion of this element in the design.

Giant Leap embraced Barloworld’s concept for Project Ekhaya, which means ‘at home’. They wanted staff to feel at home at the office, to feel comfortable and relaxed. Barloworld moved away from Barloworld Park which portrayed a traditional way of working with a closed office, to a totally opposite direction, promoting an agile working environment between departments. The brief was to create clean lines, a contemporary look and feel to re-energize the staff.

As you enter the reception you are welcomed by the double volume, white marble and timber slats behind the reception complementing elements from the architecture structure of the building. The use of timber allowed us to create a sense of an African tree.

The use of glass was also an important element, showing transparency as the company is moving into a new direction. Corporate colours were also important and have been used by adding a pop of colour onto the furniture and through the positioning of art works which have been commissioned, all complimenting the design. Use of texture has been included in carpets and floor tiles.

The beauty of the architecture has been complimented by the use of neutral tones to meet the ultimate feel of tranquillity. We followed the requirements of comfort with regards to open plan, thus making sure that lighting, air quality, temperature, acoustic quality and ergonomics are well catered for.
