Yeppoon, as a destination, is in a prime location with stunning Coral Sea views out to the Keppel Bay Islands, and to hero this natural beauty through this project has reinvigorated its sense of place. With a vision for the revitalisation, Place Design Group were engaged by Livingstone Shire Council to deliver the detailed design for the pre-existing foreshore master plan, focusing on placemaking and destination creation to spur visitation and grow the local economy.

最终该项目通过升级滑板公园设施、修整游戏场地以及改造当地地标耶蓬环礁湖，成功为城镇和海滩注入了新的活力。

The success of this project is reflected in the delivery of an activated town and foreshore, with offerings including the upgrade of skatepark facilities, a revamped playground, and the jewel in the crown, the Yeppoon Lagoon.

Sustainable Design Approach

From the early stages of the Yeppoon Foreshore and Town Centre Revitalisation project, Place Design Group took a sustainable design approach, considering what could be utilised within the site itself to aid in the sustainability of the development. This included geological survey tests of the sand within the pool area and consideration of energy consumption and water requirements of the Yeppoon Lagoon pool with the idea to deliver an energy efficient, cost efficient, community friendly project.

正因为团队在最初设计阶段就建立了创新性的可持续设计思维和解决方案，使得这些方案最终被采纳并实现落地。尤其屋顶太阳能电池板的应用成为了非常重要的一个设计点，使泳池可以在运营时间使用太阳能光伏电池供应能耗，显著降低耶蓬环礁湖的运营成本。

The approach, thinking, and consideration of incorporating innovative sustainable solutions from the initial design phase allowed realistic implementation of these solutions as part of the project itself. In particular, the inclusion of the solar panels on the roof tops has been an important initiative to drastically reduce operating costs of the Yeppoon Lagoon – with the bulk of the energy consumption during operating hours to run the pool from the solar PV cells installed.

A Community Engaging Design Process

The project team was highly engaged with the local council, and also a long list of consultants and stakeholders in collaboration towards this unifying strategic approach forthis project. While a visually appealing design was important, this project also needed to be considerate of meeting and listening to all stakeholder needs, and reliance upon Livingstone Shire Councils’ relationships to collate information and feedback to the project design team (to input into the project) was imperative for the outcome seen today.

In early stages of the project, community consultation with consultants involved early on was undertaken. Place Design Group continued design specific consultation with key stakeholders; from the local sailing club, around coordinating their event day overlays, to the local skate group to get their feedback on the skatepark design, and also community group consultation about the play space upgrades and needs.

It is through a collaborative and well-informed engagement approach, that decisions to improve connectivity and adjoining uses were able to be implemented. The high-level collaboration and stakeholder engagement involved in this project holds the potential for broader industry application, guiding local councils around Australia with a vision for a new economic era realised through strategic place activation.

A True Space Revitalisation Project

The main focus for the Yeppoon Foreshore and Town Centre Revitalisation Project was very strategic in terms of driving the local economy. It is a catalyst project that has driven tourism and brought economic uplift to the local economy and the region. 

在该项目落地之前，南部大堡礁和克佩尔群岛是临近耶蓬最知名的旅游胜地。现在，耶蓬自身也成为这样一个极具场地个性的目的地，为当地居民和游客提供可以一边沉浸在美妙风景中，一边工作、生活、玩乐或放松的美好体验——一个“地道耶蓬”体验。

Prior to the foreshore revitalisation, the Southern Great Barrier Reef and the Keppel Islands was the strongest tourism drawcard for Yeppoon. It now holds its own, with a strengthened identity of place and offering for locals and visitors alike to work, stay, play and relax in Yeppoon while soaking in the magnificent view. The project has delivered a ‘Truly Yeppoon’ experience.

而项目不仅在视觉上可圈可点，在实用性上也毫不逊色。例如，带有标志性屋顶结构的露天广场是一个游戏场所，白天可以遮阴，入夜则成为照明节点；升级后的滑板碗池现已投入使用，获得了当地滑板界的一致好评；还有游戏场地的升级让年龄较小的孩子也能够拥有合适的玩乐空间。

The aesthetically designed foreshore is visually beautiful, but also practical and usable for the community. For example, the amphitheater with its iconic roof structure creates a play space, provides shade by day and at night it becomes a nodal point with its lighting; the upgraded skate bowl is now functional and has received rave reviews from the local skate community; and the upgrade on playground provides younger children a space to enjoy.

耶蓬环礁湖的设计也着重提升空间灵活度和实用性，致力于对南端海滩的激活，以便当地居民和到访者使用。面积达2500㎡的环礁湖与沿岸商业设施相接，吸引当地居民和游客来到此地。开放空间的设计也为当地企业提供了激活泳池周边场所的机会，成为当前旅游产品的延伸。

Aimed at activating the southern end of the foreshore, Yeppoon Lagoon’s design had to be flexible and incorporate a multitude of uses for locals and visitors alike. The 2,500㎡ lagoon connects the commercial offerings along the foreshore, attracting locals and visitors to stay, play and relax. The open space design presents the opportunity for businesses to activate the space in and around the pool, providing an extension of the current tourism offering.

环礁湖周边的功能性设计，包括商业设施的朝向和摆放都经过了精心考量，以保证周围访问动线的自然流畅和使用便捷度。改造后的海边区域内有多个相互连通的全新场所，进一步加强了当地特色，提供多个户外休闲的目的地选择。

The functional design of the lagoon space, including the orientation and the placement of commercial facilities was critical to ensure there was a natural flow and for ease of accessibility. The multiple new connected offerings within the revitalised coastal footprint promotes a greater sense of place and multiple destinations for outdoor recreation.

为利文斯敦市政府设计的耶蓬海滩和城镇中心改造项目在2019年的AILA（澳洲景观建筑设计师协会）昆士兰州大奖赛中摘得了地区成就奖（昆士兰中部）。评审团认为该项目“是对昆士兰环礁湖一个颇具吸引力的重新想象，展示了区域中心内关键项目的催化作用”。

The Yeppoon Foreshore & Town Centre Revitalisation project for Livingstone Shire Council received a Regional Achievement Award (Central Queensland) at this year’s AILA (Australian Institute of Landscape architects) QLD awards. The jury noted the project as "an attractive reimagining of the Queensland coastal lagoon that illustrates the catalytic power of destination projects within regional centres".

而这一坐落在大海沿岸的改造项目正是这样一个绝佳范例，展示了一个目的地项目如何可以通过巧妙得当的设计，推动当地经济，同时尊重当地社区，打造出鲜明的地方特色。

Perched over the ocean, the project is a wonderful example of how a destination project, designed well, can drive the local economy, embrace the local community and create a strong sense of place.
