Designed by interior designer Jean-Philippe Nuel, this luxurious and elegant hotel rests on what used to be a hospital that had been in operation for over 800 years.

Monastic and precious: the juxtaposition of these two ideas expresses the aim of the decorative concept for the Grand Hôtel Dieu de Lyon. It is derived from the very essence of the building, from the history of these Hôtel-Dieu. The apparent dichotomy between the building's function and its extravagant architecture is the very essence of the Hôtel-Dieu. But while the external architecture is highly ornamental, historically the interior already expressed the dichotomy between architecture and function. Inside, the great dome displayed the same richness as the exterior, in contrast to the other much more sober spaces, with their stone floors, plastered walls and timber ceilings. Scaling 32 meters in height, the Grand Dome has become the new hub of the hotel and is the only place in the world where one can sip on a cocktail under vast amounts of rich history. All of the furnishings have been specially designed for the project in collaboration with Ligne Roset to maintain a contemporary essence with a unique atmosphere. And not to forget Lyon's know-hows, the fabrics were chosen to fit with the dialogue using Lyonnais silks from Verel de Belval against plain canvases. The ambition is to fit into the essence of the building, going beyond stylistic effect. The project aims to be contemporary, being its own identity, displaying humble restrained luxury, consistent with the history of this unique building. Black timber paneling in the lobby-reception and concierge area is punctuated by gilt wall lights, playing homage to the city of lights, visible from the outside. On the opposite, one finds large screens to punctuate the spaces and create intimacy. They are made with the same traditional Lyon silks but mix with Veronique de Soultrait's hemp artworks.

The ambition of all those involved was to bring alive the heritage while embracing the building's new function. Particular care was taken in ensuring that this historic building be accessible to the general public and in particular to the Lyonnais, who have a special relationship with the building. Because of its position within the city's landscale, as well as the sentimental and emotional position it occupies, the Grand Hôtel Dieu de Lyon is a place where visitors can experience the richness of 18th-century heritage in a new way.
