from the designer: Hey, I’m
Dana Muskat
, I live and work in Paris and I’m making Stuffed animals under the name BigStuffed.
After completing my BA in fashion design I came to Paris. I was lucky to have worked with big fashion houses such as Lanvin and Giambattista Vali, but after a short while the industry started to wear me out and it dawned on me that what I want to do is to create something of my own.
BigStuffed was conceived sort of by chance, following the birth of my baby niece . I made her a “welcome to the world” gift – a white octopus, meter long from head to tentacle.
A short while later I made another gift for my good friend’s new baby boy, very quickly the word spread. BigStuffed was born.
Following the demand I began to expand my array of characters, the octopus was joined by the humpback whale, a starfish, sting- rays, one long sardine, the huge crab and last but not least the sperm whale.
Their story is that of the Albino underwater creatures, following my attraction to pastel colors, the story came naturally. Abandoned at birth by their families in the depths of the ocean because of their difference. Now they are looking for a new family to adopt them, their new owners. Each has a unique feel and look to it except for the trademark droopy eyes which they all share, paying homage to their sad adventures.
Stories of abandonment are not fiction, this is what happens in nature sometimes when a baby is born different from everyone …. this is actually my version for ‘The ugly duckling’ story 🙂
I draw my inspirations form real animals, their shape, colors and textures, then I simplified the shape to make it resemble more of a pillow, allowing the body to embrace it. The fabrics I choose are mostly natural cottons and wools, the colors are mostly pastels with little touches of bold colors for some animals.
I wanted to create a world of light colored sea animals , a bit like angels or white birds that live under water … I started researching and found all those beautiful white creatures living in the dark ocean looking so impressive and different and fell in love with the idea of albino sea creatures….
