Continuing Single Origin’s long relationship with local artists and given the location we have utilised materials that are purposefully industrial; concrete, copper, mesh and steel. The design ensures that there is a high degree of sophistication, much like the brand itself; young and energetic but they take their coffee very seriously.
With clever elements like the fold‐up table structure and a concrete bench‐top integrated with coffee equipment, the design responds to the brief in minute and complex ways whilst maintaining polish and restraint.
The warehouse itself is located in Botany, an emerging but still very industrial part of Sydney’s inner south; this out‐of‐the‐way location needed to be exciting enough to become a destination venue. Nestled within the warehouse, not only is the cafe small (55sqm) it is long, narrow and tall presenting many spatial planning challenges. The bar enhanced the dramatic proportions of the site and hanging elements give purpose to the height of the venue. The materiality is a development of the Surry Hills project. We worked with a mural artist and a glass blower to create the artistic additions, who used colours and textures sympathetic to the design concept.
Each element – from coffee equipment to seating to artwork all came together to create one cohesive, onbrand, grown‐up space.
