The Sheridan at Birmingham will provide Assisted Living and Memory Support options for seniors in the walkable City of Birmingham, Michigan. HED designed the facility as a series of landscaped gardens and courtyards. The Assisted Living program is accommodated in a 4 story “U” shaped building that holds the corner at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and North South Street. The one-story Memory Support program is tucked safely behind the Assisted Living and opens inward to an enclosed sensory garden where residents can safely have direct access to the outside.
The quickly-expanding senior housing market brings with it a unique set of challenges: navigating multiple senior housing jurisdictions and classifications. Adapting to the varied legal, market and environmental landscapes from region to region. And above all, continually striving to better meet the physical, mental and emotional needs of elderly residents and their family members.
Over the last several years, HED has partnered with CA Ventures to develop a series of senior residences across the country. A new market for CA Ventures, expansion into the senior housing sector represented both a tremendous opportunity—and a formidable learning curve.
Acting as a partner and trusted advisor, HED developed a flexible “kit of parts” design that seamlessly adapts to each location. Unlike a single, rigid prototype, this approach ensures design integrity, high technical quality and consistency from program to program—and has garnered consistently positive responses in the process.
Utilizing every facet of HED’s integrated practice, from architecture to interiors to structural engineering, our continued work with CA Ventures is a testament to flexibility—not only in our design, but also in our ability to leverage and adapt our full-service model to meet the individual needs and goals of each client. Along the way, we’ve developed a true partnership with CA Ventures—and crafted a new approach to contemporary senior housing.
