This project in Paris' 15th arrondissement stands on two autonomous lots and is for mixed use: Behind what looks like a traditional apartment building lies a retirement home with medical services, a young workers' residence hall, a day centre for the mentally disabled and a shelter for abused women, a range of purposes that are joined by a common script.
Distributed around a single shaft, each sector contains some thirty dwellings, it is sub-divided into two other sectors separated by a four-metre gap and differentiated by the materials used: brick for one and zinc for the other.
Wide passageways cross a tree- and climbing-vine-filled garden that cover the walls. The passagewaysconnect the two structures.
The two structures are served by a single core and wide passageways, a light structure clad in wood with glass railings for leaning on.
The passageways become friendly places where occupants meet and mingle. It is a hanging garden in the middle of the 15th arrondissement.
The gaps make it possible to give each flat double or triple exposure and light the bathrooms.
The hanging garden recuperates a good deal of rain water and acts as a retention basin.
