Located in the leafy suburb of Hawthorn, No. 58 Wattle by Ewert Leaf is a collection of seven townhouses that have been thoughtfully redesigned by local design studio Ewert Leaf, building on the site and its history. Tactile material layering, carefully designed details and lush landscaping give the home an understated luxury that elevates the quality of contemporary living.
The original home at 58 Wattle Road became a reference point for Ewert Leaf as the studio sought to reinterpret its character in the new development. From the front garden, the old house looks low-key, hidden by a huge oak tree. But in terms of method, the built form reveals its ornate and high quality of detail and meticulous craftsmanship.
Working with property developer Underline, Ewert Leaf used these elements as a guiding approach to provide an elegant home with contemporary details at its core. The main form of the building is a concrete rendering, softened by a layered garden that adds to the energy of the green, as well as the texture of the old oak tree. Large floor-to-ceiling Windows ensure the presence of trees in each townhouse, presenting seasonal ephemeral displays.
The decision to plan only seven homes on the site allows them to have generous Spaces and careful planning to support functions and easy connections. Double-height glazing maximizes natural light and views, ensuring a strong visual connection between inside and outside. The physical boundaries are harmonized with the open plan living Spaces, which extend to extensive terraces and courtyards, bringing the feeling of living in a garden.
