Design Workshop

Located near the Old Town of Albuquerque, Arbolera de Vida was one of the first Spanish settlements in the city. In the 1980’s, this Hispanic neighborhood had nearly one-third of its residents living below the poverty level and the area suffered from urban blight, crime and poor air quality because of a local sawmill nearby.A grassroots advocacy effort ultimately led to the closing of the mill and the city buying the site and rezoning it for mixed uses and affordable housing.
Working with residents, local merchants and the city, Design Workshop and its consultants created a neighborhood plan which resulted in two important benefits: 1) A financial model that guards against neighborhood gentrification 2) Application of sustainable design guidelines that keep housing and operating cost low. Today, the neighborhood has re-emerged as a desirable and affordable place to live.
