One of London’s greatest museums, one of England’s greatest reclaimed, historic timbers – Pitch Pine from the old days was a very different species of pine when compared to modern day pitch pine, in fact, many of the words most famous ships were built from pitch pine. This is because of the dense resin content within the grain, which makes the timber very durable as well as water resistant.
The demands for this impressive new cafe space within the London Science Museum were very specific. If you look closely you will see that many of the wood strips are almost prime grade which was intentional, after all, this is not some kind of trendy bar or cafe in Hoxton. Each plank was milled to a delicate 12mm thick, and even at this thickness, we managed to machine a fine tongue and groove on each piece.
