It also contains essential functions that highlight the intricate craftsmanship and handiwork of artisans that is essential to Indian culture. This core opens up into various retailing sections as one moves through it. These sections have been designed to be as pure and simple as possible in order to highlight intricacies of the products. All floors are connected with a light frame structure that contains every product within. This opens up ample space for clean and linear circulation paths. The symmetry in design helps unify and bring together the complexity of colors and designs in the products as well as services provided in the store. Another important driving force is natural light that is made possible thorough the skylights located on the core.PITCHPEOPLEThe people targeted are tourists as well as locals. Both, frequent the area for various reasons.Tourists enjoy engaging themselves in the culturally rich heritage of the district mainly by foot, as there is something different to glance at from every nook and corner. A large population of locals also prefer coming to the area to purchase everyday goods as well as unique commodities that are not available anywhere else in Singapore.ISSUEAs ‘busy-ness’ dominates modern society, shopping has become a therapeutic form of relaxation for many customers. These customers are tired of ‘noise’ (not just aural but also visual and experiential). There is a case of sensory overload in the site due to the fact that it has so much to offer than it canaccommodate. This creates a lot of visual clutter and confusion for anyone, as the disorganization is prevalent throughout. This also applies to the interiors of many shops in the area. The site in particular lacks clear circulation paths or organization of goods. The presentation of their products is very poor, and hence would not attract the customer to make a purchase. The building itself has not been utilized to its fullest, instead it has just been overcrowded with so many goods that there is barely enough space for people to circulate freely within. This has also blocked their utilization of naturallight from the various openings built it into the original structure. The overcrowded interior of the building spreads onto the five-foot ways as well, which are also jammed with their goods.THEORYThe theory that would be applied to solve the various issues and constraints on the site is Minimalism. The principles of minimalism such as - light, order, visual clarity/transparency, volume and mass are used to tackle the shortcomings observed. Light - guides people through space. The reduction of Structural elements helps in highlighting other elements such as visual clarity and order, which is prevalent through circulation and organization of goods.CONTEXTThe site is located between Dunlop Street and Campbell Lane in the vibrant district of Little India. The Site also shares a wall with the newly built Indian Heritage Centre. Campbell Lane is entirely pedestrianized and is a hotspot for tourists wanting to shop, everything from gold to henna tattoos are sold here.HAPPYRefining the shopping experience on the chosen site, can help set an example to the other shops in the neighborhood that how the existence of simplicity and tranquility can co-exist in complex and elaborate settings only to create inspiring spaces that energize and encourage appreciation among customers.
