In this pandemic period, people’s daily lives have been extremely affected. At the same time, the looming environmental issues need specific actions. During this era, the construction of a modern residential building based on sustainable design makes us pay attention to the bigger picture.

Oxygen is the first residential building of such scale that will be constructed in the post-pandemic era in Greece. In addition, it is also the first residential complex in Greece with international sustainability certification (BREEAM), raising the bar for similar constructions in the near future.

Pieris Architects, the architectural firm responsible for the project (in collaboration with Sustain construction company), took a sustainable approach, focusing on bioclimatic innovation, eco-friendly materials and holistic philosophy regarding water and waste management. As they reflect “beyond the design of a low-energy building we reinvented and ultimately created a new sustainable modern urban lifestyle.”

The residential complex is consisted of 32 houses with one, two or three bedrooms and offers an astonishing view facing the Olympic Stadium of Athens. From the first moment, Oxygen impresses with its “wavy” façade and the sophisticated central entrance with the surrounding water area that resembles a luxurious hotel lobby.

The pandemic and its implications on our daily routines were taken into account by the architectural design. Thus, in the thought that a house can potentially be a workplace, emphasis was placed on providing comfortable and naturally illuminated spaces. The robust lift n’ slide aluminium frames contribute to this, covering the wide window spans, allowing beams of natural light and providing high energy performance. The sustainable approach is also evident in the outdoor spaces and communal areas, with sheltered gardens and green areas for the residents and wifi service available. It is also worth noting that each residence has a special monitoring system that measures energy consumption, encouraging this way people to adopt eco-friendly practices.

In the post-Covid era, we need “smart” homes that can provide all the necessary amenities and the required security to their residents. Oxygen is a pioneering example of sustainable construction that sets new standards for the residential complexes of the future.
