On a tight 178sqm beach front site, this project has an unflinching focus on materiality and light, orchestrated to provide a calming sanctuary for its owner. Renovated throughout to create a calm, stillness this house creates a visceral connection to place.
As a celebration of art and innovative sensibility, Matopos sees a considered restraint combine with a raw and expressive use of materiality. Atelier Andy Carson crafts a unique and sculptural addition to the streetscape that openly engages with the natural surrounds and the home’s elevated outpost.
Tightly nestled into its corner allotment, Matopos is an efficient use of space and volume and ensures a feeling of open connection is embedded throughout. Home to its philanthropist owner, the building captures the spirit of generosity and innovation through a curious undertaking of materiality and form.
As the home sits looking out over the expansive surroundings, the sandstone base connects to the natural rock formation of the area and the history of the streetscape. A sculptural nod to local surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku, the upper level then sees a facade of cast bronze wrap around the form, echoing the fluidity and shape of a wave.
The Freshwater-based home occupies a small footprint yet, through a minimalistic approach, feels expansive and generous beyond its volume. An attentive approach to detail has been embedded into each junction, ensuring joinery feels like a deliberate extension of the architecture and hides the amenity and storage of everyday life. The focus on light and connectedness forms an integral part of the experience of the home. It was important that the home captured a sense of place and open apertures remain a key conduit for that natural connection.
