As the European debut of Rosewood, and the first step to revive the "Rosewood trend" around the world, the Rosewood London, which opened in 2013, is of great importance. The hotel, designed and renovated by Yutang Ji and Martin Brudnizki, has done an excellent job of ensuring Rosewood's "debut" in London.
The hotel is housed in a neoclassical building that was first built in the Edwardian era in 1914 and has undergone four extensions, and was renovated under the guidance of English Heritage. The building's main façade, the East and West Halls of the former bank headquarters, now the hotel's Holborn Restaurant and Bar, and the grand central marble stairwell have all been identified as significant heritage assets.
After guests enter through the main entrance, they come to a quiet inner courtyard before stepping inside the hotel. This entry creates the feeling of arriving at a private estate; it is also a deliberate "white space" that allows guests a more complete view of the magnificent façade before them. Rosewood's "A Sense of Place" philosophy is to make each hotel reflect the specific history, culture and sensitivity of the city in which it is located. This is particularly true for Rosewood London. The design and lighting of the interiors and public areas, restaurants and bars needed to be sensitive to the history and culture of the old buildings, while at the same time being technically capable of being restored and upgraded.
The marble stairwell through the seven floors, the hotel's guest rooms, public areas and event spaces were all designed by Yutang Ji. He brought his own signature style to the hotel, such as a rich mix of materials: lacquer, textured wood veneers and prismatic mirrors. The foyer is covered in subtle brass, accented by black and white tiles, dark oak cabinets, parchment counters and leather sofas, and artful paintings and sculptures everywhere, a luxurious yet elegant look.
The 262 guest rooms and 44 suites create the feeling of a luxurious private residence for residents. Although the colors and decorations vary, the simplicity of modern design and the classical details of English sophistication are accompanied by the elegance of Oriental writing. The invisible design is the hidden egg of Ji Yu Tang, such as the original reading lamp, the bathroom with chairs, the not so spacious but quiet living room, and the different moods of the rooms under daylight and moonlight.
The Scarfes Bar, named after the British artist and illustrator Scarfes, is filled with Scarfes' humorous illustrations. Designer Martin Brudnizki drew inspiration from classic English gentlemen's clubs, transforming the space into a warm and vibrant venue with everything from leather armchairs and sophisticated fireplaces to a variety of vintage books. In the bar, vintage furniture is mixed and matched with new custom-made furniture, allowing guests to constantly discover new design elements.
If Scarfes Bar is one of the most exciting bars in London, then Holborn Restaurant is one of the most delightful places to dine. Also designed by Martin Brudnizki, with lighting from Dernier & Hamlyn, the restaurant is modeled after a French bistro, with red leather banquettes, mahogany tables, bronze railings and seven premium marble accents, in a lively but not boisterous style. The restaurant also features a terrace that leads to the hotel's interior courtyard, where guests can dine al fresco.
