范承宗是一位专注于竹工艺设计与艺术的台湾设计师，最近他在芎林乡（邓林贤音乐文化公园）完成了一件名为“旁边（的竹编装置艺术，它是一个雕塑，一个休憩的空间，也是一盏灯，完成之后，它更容易成为本地居民和旅客争相拍摄的景点。这个案子不只是他独力完成的，而是由六十位芎林在地的居民共同参与制作，令人震惊的是，这六十位居民在此之前，全是从来没有竹编经验的新手。

Cheng-TsungFeng, a Taiwanese designer who specializes in bamboo craft design and art,recently completed a bamboo installation art called "beside" in theTeng Yu-Hsien Music Culture Park of Qionglin Township (Hsinchu County, Taiwan).The installation is a sculpture, a space for relaxation, and a light lamp;after completion, it has become a touristattraction for local residents andvisitors to take pictures with. This installation was not only made by himalone, but with sixty local residents of Qionglin participated in theproduction. It is surprising that,before this project, all the sixty residentsnever had the experience in bamboo weaving.

在接受这个委托时，范承宗思考着要怎么让公园的装置艺术能与居民拉近关系，几次和居民们互动后才大致确定方向，他想要设计成一个大家能够一起做，甚至必须要大家一起做才能够完成的装置，这是居民而言是会天天看见的东西，如果能由他们一起参与的话，也比较有感情吧，范承宗便以为目标进行设计。

Whenreceived the commission, Feng thought about how to connect the installation artof the park with the local residents. Through the interaction with theresidents heworked the outline out, and decided to design an installationthatpeople can make together, even, has to have everyone make together. As anobject that the residents will see every day, “if they can participatetogether, then there will be more feelings attached,” Feng took this as thegoal for design.

他从传统竹编工艺中挑选了两种竹编方式–轮口编（circle weaving）和自由编（random weaving），两种简易的编织方式都是来自民间传统器工艺品的编织手法，希望居民们能够借由这次机会，亲手接触到已经渐渐消失在我们生活中的传统编织工艺。

轮口编是来自编织容器时制作开口的方式，能够自由控制圆圈的大小，由于新竹风大，替换轮口编在上头造出无数个大大小小的孔洞，能够让风通过时降低一些偏移，白天时，能够产生视觉穿透的层次感，有种类似蕾丝的细致效果，夜晚时，大大小小的孔洞也是光线的出口，透过轮口处入射的光线，像是发光的斑点。

Among the two weaving methods, “circle weaving”is a technique used in making acontainer’s mouth, free in adjusting the size of a circle. Due to the windyenvironment of Hsinchu area, “circle weaving” is adequate in creating numeroussmall holes for reducing the resistance to airflow. For the visual effect, inthe daytime, the holes create the line-of-sight penetrates the layers, a kindof lace-like meticulous effect; in the night, the lights pass through differentholes and create light spots.

自由编织则是考虑到来帮忙的乡亲都没有制作竹编的经验，而且每个人能来帮忙的时间或长或短，自由编织只要沟通好几个原则之后，大家甚至拨空来贡献个一两小时，也能马上进入状况，而且日后若是某些地方破损了，已经学会的大家也能够自行维护。

While the “random weaving”is accessible for the residents without any bambooweaving experience,and for them to come to help randomly.With the weavingprinciples clearly passed on to the participants, they can easily learn theropes of weaving even in one or two hours, as well as the future maintenance.

在概念上，范承宗希望纯粹地表达“关系”，亲近的，温柔的，陪伴的，互相中断的关系，最后的样子大家或许说不上来它们到底是什么，但能看见一个大的，身旁有一个小的，大的开口还对着小的，就像大的在看着小的，这样的安排就容易让人联想到长幼关系，感觉就像是妈妈和孩子，爷爷和孙子等等。

Conceptually,Feng is keen to express the notion of "relationship"—the intimate,gentle, companioning, interdependentconnection—which is embodied in/as theinstallation that is indescribable,but with the different shapes and sizes ofthe holes that attached with and look at one another, thus represents therelationships between young and old, mother and children, grandfather andgrandson, and so on.

传统竹编工艺通过范承宗的设想，以一个新鲜的样貌出现在居民的生活之中，经过居民一起制作的过程，传统工艺不再只是专业人士的技艺，甚至平易近人的常民智慧，就如作品的名字“旁边”一样，这些传统的宝藏就在我们旁边。

Throughthe conception made by Feng, the traditional bamboo weaving technique reappearswith a fresh look in the lives of the local.By means of theco-production withthe residents, the traditional craft art is no longer a professional skill, butan approachable wisdom for ordinary people.
