The Steiner residence, located in the Grey Oaks subdivision in western Shawnee, KS, is a far cry from the average house, both in looks and functionality.
The Steiners were determined to not compromise the way they wanted to live for the status quo.
Their playful lifestyle inspired all aspects of the design of the home.
The open-concept structure features five bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms.
Custom colorful, modern art splashes from the walls, offering a glimpse into the family’s personality.
The rooftop provides a playful and secluded space to watch movies, relax or practice putting.
“We want people to realize you can be creative no matter where you live.” -- Brad Satterwhite, the co-founder and principal architect of KEM STUDIO.
The Steiners are heavily involved in the urban core of Kansas City but wanted to live close to friends and family in the suburbs. They purchased an undeveloped lot in a cul-de-sac near their kids' school and were determined to not compromise the way they wanted to live for the status quo. As a result, their playful lifestyle inspired all aspects of the design of the home - from the indoor slide to the roof terrace (that includes a putting green). We were influenced by a modern interpretation of a traditional form. Some neighbors love it and some question it, but our biggest compliment came from their youngest son who said, "I love our house because it feels like we're on vacation every day!"
