ENG - During the first edition of the Fall Design Week in Milan, a project-installation in the fashion district, conceived by two international architects: Piero Lissoni and Patricia Urquiola. “ELLE DECOR GRAND HOTEL” is the project-installation born out of an idea by Elle Decor Italia, the international design and trend magazine, set up in the rooms of Palazzo Morando – Costume Moda Immagine, in Milan, at 6 Via Sant’Andrea, today home to a museum dedicated to the city and the civic collection of Costume and Fashion.

As highlighted by Livia Peraldo Matton, editor-in-chief of Elle Decor Italia: “The idea of creating ELLE DECOR GRAND HOTEL is the result of reflection on the evolution of the hotel concept, which we have dealt with in the pages of our magazine. Over the past twenty-five years, we have indeed seen a true transformation in hotel design. Boutique and design hotels have appeared, projects with strong identity have become widespread, not just perfect from a hospitality point of view, but also places of experience.” ELLE DECOR GRAND HOTEL offers visitors a personal experience, thanks to rooms especially for socialising, reading, wellness and hospitality, leaving them free to explore bedrooms, lounges and gardens. Two exceptional names behind the project also in the hotel sector: Piero Lissoni, who designed the project for the public areas, conceived as those of a “Hôtel Particulier”, and Patricia Urquiola who designed the more private rooms, the “Stanzas”.

“I have conceived a hotel that is an aristocratic hostel rather than a hotel”, says Milanese architect and designer Piero Lissoni, ”simply changing the aesthetics of the interiors and using the style code of Italian architects at the turn of the seventeenth century, a particularly bright period with very strict architectural proportions. The whole project works on evident contrasts, classic with modern and modern that dialogues with history.” The rooms he has designed, given the French names Accueil, Fumoir, Bibliothèque, Café & Restaurant, Séjour and Jardin, are furnished with contemporary design pieces that are in relation with facades and interiors of historic palazzos reproduced with photographic elaborations on the walls.

“I thought of the Grand Hotel bedroom”, says Spanish architect and designer Patricia Urquiola, “avoiding an interpretation in serial, repetitive ‘sample room’ style, preferring to imagine a series of rooms as the separate moments in a story. This led to the ambiguity of the title: ‘Stanzas’, which sounds like a Spanish word but instead refers to the various verses in ‘Stanzas in Meditation’ (1929), a collection of poems by Gertrude Stein. They came back to me as the idea for this project was taking shape. The furnishings are therefore a series of fragments, interpreting the many ways of personally experiencing the interiors of a room in a Grand Hotel: a room for one, two, three, four, five…"

ITA - ELLE DECOR GRAND HOTEL: in mostra a Milano, nel quadrilatero della moda, il Grand Hotel secondo Elle Decor. Dal 5 al 22 ottobre un progetto-installazione sarà allestito nelle sale di Palazzo Morando, oggi sede di un museo dedicato alla città e alla collezione civica di Costume e Moda. L'idea è di Elle Decor Italia. Il progetto, a quattro mani, porta la firma di Piero Lissoni, che ha creato negli spazi condivisi una sorta di 'ostello aristocratico', e Patricia Urquiola, che ha disegnato gli ambienti privati immaginando le diverse stanze come 'momenti sparsi di un racconto'.

“L’idea di dar vita a ELLE DECOR GRAND HOTEL – spiega Livia Peraldo Matton, direttore responsabile di Elle Decor Italia – nasce dalla riflessione sull’evoluzione dell’hotellerie che abbiamo sempre affrontato e registrato sulle pagine del nostro magazine. Nel corso del tempo abbiamo infatti assistito a una vera e propria trasformazione nella progettazione degli alberghi. Sono nati i boutique e design hotel, si sono andati diffondendo progetti dalla forte identità, non solo perfetti sotto il profilo dell’ospitalità, ma anche luoghi di esperienze”. ELLE DECOR GRAND HOTEL offre ai visitatori un percorso da sperimentare in prima persona, attraversando gli ambienti riservati alla convivialità, alla lettura, al wellness e all’ospitalità, liberi di curiosare tra camere, salotti, giardini. E’ firmato da due progettisti d’eccezione anche nel campo dell’hotellerie: Piero Lissoni, autore del progetto degli spazi pubblici concepiti come quelli di un “Hôtel Particulier”, e Patricia Urquiola che ha disegnato gli ambienti più privati, le “Stanzas”.

“Ho concepito un albergo che non fosse un albergo, piuttosto un “ostello aristocratico”, racconta l’architetto e designer milanese Piero Lissoni, “semplicemente cambiando l’estetica degli spazi e usando la cifra stilistica di architetti italiani a cavallo tra XVI e XVII secolo, periodo particolarmente luminoso e di rigorosissime proporzioni architettoniche. L’intero progetto lavora su dei contrasti evidenti, classicità con modernità e la modernità che dialoga con la storia”. Gli ambienti che ha disegnato, chiamati con nomi francesi Accueil, Fumoir, Bibliothèque, Café & Restaurant, Séjour e Jardin, sono arredati con pezzi di design contemporaneo, che dialogano con facciate e interni di palazzi storici riprodotti con elaborazioni fotografiche a parete.

“Ho pensato alla camera del Grand Hotel”, spiega l’architetto e designer spagnola Patricia Urquiola, “evitando di interpretarla come ‘stanza campione’ seriale e ripetitiva, bensì immaginandomi un susseguirsi di stanze come momenti sparsi di un racconto. Da qui l’ambiguità del titolo: ‘Stanzas’, che riecheggia come un termine spagnolo, ma che invece corrisponde alle varie strofe di ‘Stanzas in Meditation’ (1929), raccolta di poesie di Gertrude Stein, che mi sono tornate in mente mentre prendeva forma l’idea del progetto. Così, l’allestimento si articola in una serie di frammenti che interpretano le molteplici forme di vivere, intimamente, lo spazio della camera di un Grand Hotel: la stanza per 1, per 2, per 3, 4, 5...”.
