Three rural communities north of Rotterdam merged in 2007 to become the municipality of Lansingerland. A new town hall and municipal offices was commissioned. In keeping with its environment this became a country house on an estate.
A transparent government building is surrounded by fruit trees that blossom in springtime. Public, and accessible for everyone who participates in the local democracy, gets married or wants to register a birth. The slightly sloping drive to the entrance is flanked on the right by municipal offices situated on a finger of land encircled by water. Parked cars disappear from sight.
Daylight from all sides fills the central hall of the public building, inspired by the greenhouses in the surrounding district. Offices are reached by an elevated bridge. Their character is enclosed and yet flexible since - if necessary - sections can be sublet.
The building is a cornerstone of this new urban community.
