Berlin is one of my absolute favourite cities, with a balance of fascinating history and super-cool-modern Architecture – the place oozes class at every turn. So it comes as no surprise that Apartment B by Thomas Kröger is located to the west of the German Capital in the affluent and vibrant area of Charlottenburg. There is no denying that everything about this exquisite refurbishment hits the mark on every single level, with a meticulous and almost obsessive attention to detail that evokes pure joy.

Designed for an art collector and enthusiast, who also clearly has an awesome eye for 20th century furniture, the main spaces within the apartment act as merely a backdrop or blank canvas. It would be easy to overlook the stunning workmanship that creates this project, on looking closer it becomes clear that every single line and junction has been considered (which, trust me, is a mammoth undertaking!), a testament to the Architect and their complete focus on achieving something extraordinary. Even corridors on this scheme become something of an experience, becoming vast libraries with carefully positioned mirrors that play tricks on the eye, and also exaggerate perspective. This is a theme that we see reoccurring throughout the project – look twice and you see that opening to the next room is in fact just a reflection.

The reception rooms maintain the cornice and ornate ceiling detail, in a sympathetic move that helps to elevate the grandeur of the interior. New details and junctions are treated with a minimal elegance which neither detract or scream for attention but exist in harmony with the original features. Sections of wall have also been removed, opening up the whole floor plan and oversized thresholds introduced that highlight the generous ceiling heights and spaciousness.

In contrast to the slick living spaces, is the uber-lux and materially rich bathrooms. Here, the designers clearly allowed themselves to let loose, the wet areas having their own distinct personalities that pop with colour and excitement. We see luxurious stones such as Persian Travertine, exciting textures that crave to be touched, beautiful timbers, and quirky lighting techniques that strive way beyond the standard. In making this design choice and allowing for the smaller, functional rooms to become a sensory overload, Thomas Kröger Architects have shown that they are capable of way more than just slick, minimal detailing and welcomed a playful side to shine through.

In the end, this project becomes a shining example of how to tastefully and sensitively tackle refurbishment. A nod to the context, an injection of the modern and a splash of fun results in a home that makes visitors smile both inside and out.
