A Bakery in France, on the Rue Saint-Domenico in the seventh arrondissement of Paris, was designed by local design studio Emmanuelle Simon. She had recently read an article about the special role of life in Paris, one of the symbols of French art. Simon chose to emphasize the architectural concept of the place and highlight the one but very effective and immortal motive -- the ark.
A series of arched niches set the rhythm for the bakery's compact space. Using a symmetrical layout, Simon cut a niche into two adjacent walls to divide the room in two. Inspired by the surface of the bread, she painted the walls of the bakery the color of flour, giving it a smooth, jagged appearance.
Another arched niche, marked with stucco and neon signs, is at the centre of the bakery, with a croissant logo on it. Next to it is a product-making window that allows customers to tour the kitchen and watch fresh bread and pastries being made. It was the life, the active dough texture, the flour, the freshly baked bread that became the starting point for selecting materials and colors.
The tranquil tones and simple but stately architecture complement warm wood surfaces, ancient ceramic POTS and Simon designed bagel lamps. Emmanuelle Simon managed to create a bright, tactile space that provides a fitting backdrop for French air croissants, rye bread and crunchy Baguettes.
