OpenGym locates on a grass land of Qianhai Future City / Architecture Exhibition 2020: Instant City in Shenzhen, China. Eight identical wooden modules create various recreational spaces. As the name suggests, OpenGym refers to the combined functional spaces provide children’s sports and physical training. At the same time, it also implies the concept of “movable” modular gym.
OpenGym module unit enriches sports form through the “plug and play” functional wall (referred to as plug-in wall), such as basketball, football, hockey, rock climbing, etc. The replaceable plug-in wall greatly improves efficiency and functionality of the module.

Children’s health is one of the focuses of citizens in the future, and lack of sports space is a problem. The owner hopes to drop OpenGym modules in urban public spaces, such as plazas, residential blocks, parks, shopping malls, school playgrounds, etc., so as to develop adaptability with combination of small modules. Supplemented by a variety of sports facilities and ball games, OpenGym bring health and fun to sports kids.

OpenGym is composed of 1.8m cube standard modules. They present “c, n, u” and other forms by rotating themselves to different sides. Countless combinations can be obtained under different layouts, which meet the needs of various sports games, like Lego blocks.

The curved space excavated from the module is connected through different module combinations to produce spatial experience such as blocking, sheltering, leaning and inducing. A spiral circulation is hidden in the modules, leading the main space flow.

Mr Yan, the magic carpenter, played a key role in manufacturing. He devoted himself to testing module structure and techtonics. After many material comparisons and process considerations, he finally chose Rose Eucalyptus as major material and utilized tenon and mortise technique to meet structural requirement in multi-directional rotating situation. He built the connection between modules delicate and stable, making the three-dimensional growth of modules possible.
We hope that OpenGym becomes a public children education spatial vehicle. Its openness, alternation and mobility make OpenGym modules insert spaces in cities for the sake of children’s better health.
