The New Hyatt Hotel, , is located in a special location in Jingdezhen, China's "Porcelain Capital". The history of ceramic production here dates back almost two thousand years, and the streets of the city and old houses are decorated with tiles and tiled decor. To pay homage to the area's decorative and architectural traditions, David Chipperfield Architects and AIM Architecture actively integrated ceramics into the hotel's architecture and interiors.
The expressiveness of the laconic buildings of the hotel is given by red brick facades, the monolithic elements of which the architects countered with openwork partitions and fences. While developing the concept of the interiors, the authors conceived the sequence of the hotel's public spaces as a metaphorical “journey” through the history of Chinese porcelain. So, the lobby is dedicated to the origin of the material, the lounge area is dedicated to the production process, the banquet hall is dedicated to technological discoveries, the restaurant is dedicated to popularity, the spa area is dedicated to the formation of heritage.
“In each space, we tried to use ceramic finishing materials in our own way,” explain the designers from AIM Architecture. “Here you can find contrasting combinations of rough, unfinished terracotta surfaces and the fragile sophistication of porcelain.” Guests are greeted by a spacious hall with a minimalist labyrinth of platforms in red terrazzo to match the red-brick columns. On the platforms, the architects placed lava-like installations inspired by traditional ceramic kilns and the processes that accompany the firing.
Against a peach-red background, the reception area and lounge stand out brightly: the architects lined the walls and floor with dark green tiles in celadon glaze. The cellular pattern of the tiled layout picks up the coffered ceiling, and the abundance of glossy surfaces is compensated by soft carpets and cozy mid-century furniture.
In the interior of the restaurant, the terracotta architectural background was paired with a deep blue hue, reminiscent of cobalt porcelain. There is a dark ceiling, a cloudy tile pattern on the floor, and porcelain finishes of swirling elements on traditional Chinese tables. The guest rooms look almost monochrome and look logical in the context of the terracotta architecture of the complex.
