—— Daniel Rich
“What is intriguing to me is that the desires expressed in these buildings are in neither case those of ‘the people’ but are instead closely linked to the desires of individuals.” – Daniel Rich
Daniel Rich
Daniel Rich

Daniel Rich was born in 1977 in Ulm, Germany, and currently living in New York. As a global artist in the digital age, Daniel Rich portrays iconic examples of architectural monuments, such as the plastics exchange in Guangzhou and the pyramid hotel in Pyongyang, in order to evoke reconsideration about how the political power is embodied in architecture. With pleasing color coordination and disciplined gridding, his paintings depict spaces in a compelling but profound way that goes beyond simple representation and reveals how the desire mirrored by architecture.
Daniel Rich’s portraits of apartment complexes in megalopolises bewilder and upset audience by displaying a real place without the existence of people. In these ubiquitous but strange scenes, the wills of individuals are articulated sliently through every window in the city with their absence. Hidden infrastructures that pervade in all corners of the city are also portrayed in filters as symbolic spaces that demonstrate how architecture manifests desire.
Selecting images of architecture, which was always able to provide clues about a period in time, from all around the world, Daniel Rich views his works as a form of history paintings, and perfects his subjects within the Desire-Design-Chronology triangle.
