David Thulstrup has completed a new flagship store in Stockholm for J. Lindeberg highlighting the Swedish brand’s sport fashion heritage and future direction under creative director Jens Werner. The brief was to design and refine a clear and distinctive expression that can be used across its own retail stores and for shop in shop concessions.

“J. Lindeberg has a renewed focus on its roots, so my starting point was its logo which is called the bridge. I wanted to implement that into the design language along with cues from Op art and the sporty patterns of the ‘70s,” says David Thulstrup, the principal of the Copenhagen-based studio.

The palette of the new retail showroom is kept neutral using materials like concrete and platane wood to create a luxurious yet sporty ambience that enables J. Lindeberg to tell its whole brand story from men’s or women’s fashion to ski or golf wear. A splash of pale-yellow flocked panel picks up J. Lindeberg’s signature colour.
“Because J. Lindeberg is inspired by the 70s, I referenced that period in colours, textiles and patterns. So there’s a geometric play of curves and straight lines overlaid with a strong graphic element that is repetitive and rather like some of the patterns in the clothing,” says Thulstrup.

The solid base of the polished concrete floor and concrete effect on the walls is a strong foil for softer more luxurious finishes such as the flock-textured walls and the warm-toned platane wood. Curved and straight metal clothing racks and fibre glass panels used as dividers give it a techy feel that also aligns with the clothing range.

The new store is designed as a flexible and multi-purpose space rather like a gallery that can be used for events and other activities beyond the usual retail operations.
“David and I have worked closely on how to apply the new JL direction into our new store concept. The re-making of the store is in a way the starting point of the new future for J.Lindeberg. David has an understanding for our heritage and where our brand is heading, and together we have created something really amazing that reflects our aim to redefine JL’s rich sports fashion history. JL is a dynamic international sports fashion brand and we need our physical spaces to reflect just that. The new flagship store is not just a store, it is a multi-purpose space where we can experiment and try new things out and let our customers play an important role” says creative director Jens Werner. This clash is interpreted in the retail concept through a clever mix of materials.

The overall effect is a cosmopolitan and relaxed luxe rather than Scandinavian minimalism, in tune with the brand.
“I’m taking references from J. Lindeberg’s DNA and making them current and contemporary. But, as I always like to do, there’s something familiar in the materiality or the repetition you can relate to and which, therefore, creates an emotional connection,” says Thulstrup.
