台州府城墙，始建于东晋，至今千岁有余。一岁将尽，老城如故，城墙又经历了一次轮回，但这次在它身边，多了些新人的低语。

Taizhou city wall, built in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, is more than 1000 years old. When one year is coming to an end, the old city is as old as before, and the city wall has experienced another reincarnation, but this time there are some new whispers besides it.

In Song Dynasty, Wen Tianxiang passed by Linhai, and wrote a poem praising him: “the land of fairies on the sea mountain meets Jigu Peng by chance. In the picture of all things, in the world of jade.”Taizhou city wall, located near the sea, is also known as the great wall of the south of the Yangtze River. It is also like the reclining dragon, which has undergone several historical changes from generation to generation, continuing the cultural lifeline of the old city. The old urban area surrounded by the city wall has retained the complete local village space structure. An ancient Ziyang Street runs through the ancient city area, connecting the old shops on both sides of the street, showing a strong cultural atmosphere.The project is located at the foot of the city wall beside Ziyang ancient street in Taizhou, and is transformed from several local dwellings . How to root in the local culture, to echo the city wall, and to create a new cultural living room, has become the main design appeal of this project.

城墙确实老了，老街也是。原始用地内沿着城墙坐落着若干典型浙江民居，粉墙黛瓦，内部屋架为传统木结构，青石板铺就的路面仅能容纳小型机动车通行。

但作为新人，我们创造了更多可能。场地内需要容纳不同的功能使用场景：咖啡厅、书店、展览、美食教室、珠宝展示、茶室、民宿。结合原有的建筑布局和空间使用特点，我们在建筑内部营造积极的流动空间，串联不同的空间节点，将文化记忆和空间场景进行有机的融合，同时提供不同的场景使用可能性。

The walls are really old, and so are the old streets. In the original land, there are a number of typical local residential buildings along the city wall, with white walls and black tiles. The internal roof truss is of traditional wood structure, and the pavement paved with bluestone slabs can only accommodate small motor vehicles.

But as the new one, we create more possibilities. The venue needs to accommodate different functional spaces: coffee shop, bookstore, exhibition, gourmet classroom, jewelry display, tea room, and B & B. Combined with the original architectural layout and space characteristics, we create a positive flow space inside the building, connect different space nodes, organically integrate cultural memory and space scene, and provide different scene possibilities.

在建筑外部，我们选择运用现代设计手法对传统元素进行转译，采用现代材料新建“第三空间”，这一古法新作的设计语汇不仅在两个主体建筑之间创造了入口庭院空间，还延续至建筑的第五立面，利用建筑的原有坡屋面搭建钢结构大台阶，与城墙遥相呼应。新老碰撞，历史和现代在此交叠，形成时空对话。

Outside the building, we choose to use modern design methods to translate the traditional elements and build a new “third space” with modern materials. This new design vocabulary not only creates the entrance courtyard space between the two main buildings, but also extends to the fifth vertical plane of the building. The original sloping roof of the building is used to build large steps of steel structure, which echoes with the city wall.New and old collide, history and modernity overlap here, forming a dialogue between time and space.

临海历来多文人，常言道腹有诗书气自华，这次改建中，我们也尽己所能，保留了这股清气。作为从紫阳街方向而来接触的第一界面，我们希望咖啡厅不仅是一个提供喝咖啡的场所。沿街的基座长凳为来往的人们提供交流互动的公共空间，不定期更换的橱窗向人们展示临海老城的时光变迁。

咖啡厅内居中的U字型操作吧台增加了咖啡制作员与顾客交流的界面，通透的开放式吧台设计打破了室内外的边界，重新定义了和老街的对话。

The U-shaped operation bar in the middle of the coffee shop increases the communication interface between coffee makers and customers. The transparent open bar design breaks the boundary between indoor and outdoor, and redefines the dialogue with the old street.

通高的入口空间将两侧的书墙沿着楼梯延续至二层的书店。在这里或倚窗而坐怡然拾卷，或席地而坐以书会友，抬眼处每扇窗口都是城墙画卷，轻松生动的人文氛围油然而生。

The high entrance space extends the book walls on both sides along the stairs to the second floor. Here, you can sit by the window and pick up the book, or sit on the ground to meet friends with books. Every window is a picture of the city wall, which brings about a relaxed and vivid cultural atmosphere.

入口庭院的另一边是高低错落、可分可合的流动空间，这里不定期举办各种活动，“再∙地艺术家”计划，独立展览，“再•剧场”话剧排演，“肚抖喜剧公社”演出，“在地写作者计划”纪录片制作，城市会客厅分享会等等。窗外树影婆娑，空气、阳光和自然自由穿梭其间，成为人们交谈言欢的背景。

On the other side of the entrance courtyard is a floating space with high and low levels, which can be separated and combined. Various activities are held here from time to time, such as the “re · Di artist” plan, independent exhibition, “re · theater” drama rehearsal, “belly shaking comedy commune” performance, “local writer plan” documentary production, and City reception hall sharing meeting. Outside the window, the shadows of trees are whirling, and the air, sunshine and nature are freely shuttling among them, becoming the background for people to talk and have fun.

沿着墙垛拾级而上，行走于野趣丛生之间，止步仰望，30米长的斑驳城墙如古代画卷般徐徐展开，展现时间与空间的线性叙述。

Walking up the steps along the wall buttresses and among the wild interests, and looking up, the 30 meter long mottled wall slowly unfolds like an ancient picture scroll, showing the linear narration of time and space.

通过新搭建的空中廊桥，可以直接到达最核心区域，一个以城墙为背景的小型文化客厅，这里可以容纳多种公共活动，如文化艺术表演城下乐事、读诗会、开放麦脱口秀等等。在这里，历史的文明与自然的元素在空中对流，产生新的化学反应，新人们能对着古老的城墙欢呼，高歌，吟诗，城墙岿然，以静默对答着新人、新时代的声音。

Through the newly built air bridge, you can directly reach the core area, a small cultural living room with the city wall as the background, which can accommodate a variety of public activities, such as cultural and artistic performances under the city wall, poetry reading meeting, open talk show, etc. Here, historical civilization and natural elements flow in the air, producing new chemical reactions. The new people can cheer, sing and chant poems to the ancient city wall. The city wall answers the voice of the new people and the new era in silence.

Cultural narrative

项目从设计到落地历时良久，有些受当地条件限制导致的设计变更也促使我们思考如何把握本土化特色和现代设计之间的平衡。施工期间还遭遇台风，江水倒灌古城受淹，疫情拖滞工期。然而，这座千年古城饱经风霜后的恢复能力再一次令我们对这承载历史文化缩影的城墙抱有深深的敬畏之心。灾后项目也渐渐收尾，成为古城的新文化地标。《还有诗和远方》拉开了与古城对话的新文化序幕，设计中反复推敲的场景都已慢慢变成现实，为古城注入了新的活力。

The project takes a long time from design to implementation. Some design changes due to local conditions also prompt us to think about how to balance the local characteristics and modern design. During the construction period, typhoon was also encountered, the flood flowed back into the ancient city, and the epidemic delayed the construction period. However, the resilience of the millennium old city once again makes us deeply awed by the city wall which bears the epitome of history and culture. After the disaster, the project finally completed and became a new cultural landmark of the ancient city. “There are poems and the distance” opened a new cultural prelude to the dialogue with the ancient city. The scenes of repeated deliberation in the design have gradually become reality, injecting new vitality into the ancient city.
