This project consisted in the integral renovation of a single-detached dwelling located in Madrid. The project had been requested by a young family with 3 children who want a place that will fit perfectly into their active life and family situation.
The house’s perimeter is of 500 squared meters (m2). The property is divided in a ground floor with common areas, a first floor where the bedrooms are found, an attic, office and garden.
The renovation´s main objective was to create a simple, functional space, while taking advantage of the properties of the natural light. To achieve this, it was proposed to make an open and ordered distribution with the correct use of floor space and volume space to maximize it as possible.
Natural, traditional and timeless materials, such as stone, wood and metals were used for the renovation. In the employment of mentioned materials, its beauty, nature and properties were also respected. Yet, the investigation and innovative techniques to manipulate and install the materials were not abandoned, being these important characteristics of the project and study. The project’s concept and functionality will follow the guidelines of implementing a specific material in each constructed volumetric space, while successively mixing in materials when there is a needed of modification in geometry or volume. Simultaneously, generating a variety of atmospheres and finishes that will give the property a unique personality.
First, we generated a one-space ground floor, where the hall, living and dining areas have different atmospheres. This being achieved through encircling, generating and making each space independent through a unique component in its center known as the “bubble”, completely constructed with oak wood, and containing inside a wardrobe, cupboard and a wine cellar.
In the ground floor, the service area is also found. This will have access from the street, garage, service bedroom, kitchen and laundry room.
Then, in the first floor the 4 bedrooms and bathrooms are found. We aimed to create a large and luminous space, with the necessary storage space. The children’s bathrooms were formed with Krion capsules, with its membranes covering continuously the inside and outside part of the capsules. The Krion material allows the creation of a continuous curvature surface, without joints, favouring a formal-functional integration and generating an attractive, clean, fun and personalized space. Each youngster will have a different colour in their bathroom, giving their area a personal touch.
The attic is separated from the rest of the house, by a slat system that gives privacy and natural light to the office in it. The space is presided by a central working table designed with a steel lamp and a mechanism that allows the whole table to be electrically connected.
The garden is organized with a metallic structure formed by triangular flowerpots that ends up circling the entire home. In the back part, there is a small prairie with a playhouse for the children.
Each element in the house is singular and unique… the cellar, the children’s bathrooms, the garden playhouse and the furniture are all designed and crafted to perfectly equip the house.
