Giancarlo Valle designed this apartment in downtown New York for longtime client Kevin Wendle that feels alive even when no one is home. In this attic, Giancarlo Valle proves that he is a master of "inadvertently being different". Kevin Wendle said of him, "Even without reading his portfolio, I knew he had the taste, vision and perspective I would expect from a designer."
Kevin Wendle asked the designers to make it livable. Considering the setting of the building, the top floor of the warehouse building with industrial-size skylights, he asked the architects to avoid refinement in favor of "real materials that can be seen and felt." The interior living room features Giancarlo Valle's convex back Kevin sofa, the designer's interpretation of Scandinavian modernity.
Giancarlo Valle brought the building's solidity into the interior to satisfy the client, covering the floors with oak panels more than a foot wide against a backdrop of white walls and nearly black floors. Giancarlo Valle is always looking for pieces that look alive, like apartments that come to life when no one is home.
